The honest answer is: it depends on four things — kitchen size, board grade, hardware brand, and countertop material. This guide breaks each one down so you know what to ask before anyone quotes you a number.

What's Actually Inside the Price

Most suppliers quote a lump sum without explaining what drives it. Here's what you're actually paying for.

1. Kitchen size and layout

Pricing in JB is typically quoted per linear metre or as a package for a defined configuration. A straight-run 2.4m kitchen is the entry point. An L-shaped 3.6m kitchen with an island is at the other end.

Layout matters too! An island adds cost beyond just the extra metre, because it requires additional structural support and is often finished on all four sides.

2. Board grade

The board is the carcass. The structural core every cabinet is built from. Three grades are common in JB:

• Standard E2 particle board — cheapest, not moisture-resistant. Swells and delaminates in wet kitchens within 2–3 years. Fine for dry areas in air-conditioned rooms, but a risk near steam or water.
• MR (moisture-resistant) particle board — green core board, E1 rated, designed for Malaysian humidity. This is the minimum we recommend for any JB kitchen.
• Marine plywood — the right call for wet kitchens, under-sink areas, and laundry cabinets. Costs more than standard board, but survives direct water exposure far better.

The upgrade from standard to MR board is one of the highest-ROI decisions in a kitchen build. The cost difference on a full kitchen is modest. The cost of replacing a warped kitchen three years early is not.

3. Hardware

Hardware is where suppliers quietly save money or where you spend a little more and feel the difference every day.

• Generic hinges and slides: Work fine initially, start failing within 2–3 years.
• Blum Clip Top hinges + Tandembox drawer slides: Rated to 200,000 cycles. The difference in daily feel is immediate — soft-close, solid, no rattle.
• Häfele equivalent hardware: Similar quality tier to Blum.

For a home you plan to live in for 10+ years, specify name-brand hardware. It's not the place to save.

4. Countertop material

• Post-form laminate: Budget option. Attractive initially, vulnerable to heat and moisture at edges over time.
• Quartz: The standard for JB kitchens. Heat-resistant, non-porous, easy to clean. Recommended for wet kitchens.
• Solid surface (e.g. Corian): Seamless look, repairable, mid-to-high price point.
• Natural stone (marble, granite): Highest price and maintenance. Marble stains; granite needs sealing. Not recommended for wet kitchens unless you're committed to the upkeep.

Dry Kitchen vs Wet Kitchen

In Malaysian homes, the dapur kering and dapur basah often need different specs and carry different costs.

The wet kitchen faces steam, oil, and direct water. It should always use MR or marine-grade board, quartz or solid surface countertop, and ideally aluminium-frame cabinet doors above the hob zone.

The dry kitchen can use a slightly lower board grade if budget is tight, though we recommend keeping hardware quality consistent throughout.

Budget roughly 30–40% more for the wet kitchen on a per-metre basis compared to the dry kitchen.

What's Included (and What's Not)

A proper quote from a reputable JB cabinet maker should include:

• Carcass and door panels
• Hardware (hinges, slides, handles)
• Edge banding
• Delivery and installation
• Basic site touch-up after installation

What's often quoted separately:

• Countertop (sometimes bundled, sometimes not — ask)
• Electrical points or plumbing relocation
• Hob, sink, and oven (appliances)
• Wall tiling behind cabinets
